Landscape Photography Tips

Landscape photography is a favorite amongst professional and amateur photographers alike.

There’s something about landscape photography that can really show the beauty nature has to offer.

Being able to capture it really feels like a gift.

Think about a beautiful landscape that you’ve seen. You probably get a feeling of relaxation while you have a big smile on your face.

Getting a great landscape photo can really create feelings in you that put you at ease.

However, landscape photography is something that’s not really easy. It’s not always an easy task to get that beautiful scenery.

Translating what you see with your eyes doesn’t always translate to your camera.

Because of this, there are tips that you can follow to take better landscape photos every time.

Landscape Photography Tips

There’s never going to be a time where you get the picture you want every time.

A lot of the time it could take you multiple shots to get the one you’re happy with. Even then, you may not be completely satisfied with it.

The same is true when it comes to your landscape shots.

Luckily, there are always tips that you can follow to help you with your photography skills. Remembering and understanding these tips is going to help you improve your photography skills.

They’re also going to specifically help your landscape photography skills. You won’t be stuck in a place for hours trying to get the picture you want.

You’ll be able to manipulate your camera and scenery in ways that will allow you to get the best possible photo, as fast as possible.

Tripod

Trying to get a great landscape photo is extremely difficult without a steady camera.

It’s not enough to feel like you have a steady hand. You have to have a steady hand.

However, most of the time, this isn’t going to be enough.

This is why a tripod is something that can really come in handy.

With a tripod, you aren’t going to have to worry about your hands slightly shaking at the last moment causing the picture to be a little skewed.

A tripod will ensure that the camera isn’t moving and you’ll be able to get the exact picture you want.

For the best landscapes, I would recommend using the Manfrotto 755CX3, simply because there is no messing around with that tripod.

Other tripods like the Zomei M5 will get the job done as well if you want a cheaper option.

Golden Hour

Golden hour is a time of day, usually about an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset where the lighting is going to be perfect for photography.

There isn’t going to be too much light or too little. When the sun is directly above you, there’s typically too much light. When the sun hasn’t risen yet, there typically isn’t enough light.

This is a tip that you can use for any type of photography that you do.

Golden hour is going to provide you with the best possible lighting. It’s particularly effective when you’re out in nature trying to capture something like the perfect landscape photo.

You need to always keep in mind that lighting is one of the most important aspects of photography. So, understanding lighting will take you very far.

Depth

All good photos have depth to them.

If you can create a sense of depth in your landscape photos, they are going to pop much more than they would if you didn’t have any depth.

You want the photo to look like it’s three dimensional. Having a picture that looks flat doesn’t give it any excitement. They are typically the most boring types of photos.

To give a good depth of field in your landscape photos, you need to keep as many things in focus as possible. The more you have in focus, the more depth you’ll be able to create with your pictures.

Point of View

Try taking the photo from a different point of view.

If you’re on a tourist trail, there are usually going to be points where you’re given an opportunity to take the “best” photo.

These points on the trail will give you good pictures. However, they aren’t always the best spots.

You’ll be having a very similar photo as everyone else that’s been at that spot.

Changing the point of view will give you a bit more creativity with your shot and allow your pictures to be different than the rest.

Maybe you need to walk 50 yards further up the trail to get this picture.

You’d be surprised at how much a small change of perspective will change the way your photos look.

Focal Points

The best photos have a certain focal point. Without a focal point, your eyes are going to keep wondering around looking for a point that’s supposed to be the subject.

When it comes to landscape photography, most people will tend to overlook the fact that they need a focal point still. Having a landscape photo without a focal point will be a little bland.

You need something like a building, tree, or rock formation to help give your landscape the perfect focal point so your entire picture doesn’t turn out bland.

Lines

Leading lines are what will allow your viewer’s eyes to find your focal point much faster.

They can help guide your photo.

Using lines is going to help create even more depth in your photos. They will also help give you a sense of scale.

Both of those elements are going to be important in making your landscape photos really pop. They prevent a two-dimensional image from actually looking two-dimensional.

The Sky

The sky can really make your image look amazing or keep it from reaching its full potential.

For example, if you think you have the perfect shot set up for yourself, but the sky is plain and bland at the moment, the picture you take won’t be nearly as good as it could be.

Try waiting it out a little bit for some clouds to roll in creating more for the image.

The sky is something you really can’t control so it might not always work in your favor.

Foregrounds

Foregrounds are something that can really add depth to any photo you take, but especially with landscape photography.

Having a solid foreground can really break apart your picture and cause separation.

Your picture won’t look like one flat image with a solid foreground.

A good way to get a good foreground in your landscape photos is to add the ground. When you show the ground that’s close to your feet, you are really able to show a lot more in the photo.

This gives the entire landscape more depth and it shows distance.

Movement

Being able to capture some motion while taking a landscape photo is going to add a different dynamic to your photos.

When you can capture some movement in your landscape photos, you’ll be able to have a better story with your picture.

Most of the time, photos that lack movement will not be able to convey nearly as much as one that does have movement.

For example, if you’re at the beach, capturing a landscape with the water washing on shore shows a lot more than the water without any movement.

Weather

The weather can really change the way any scene looks.

If you took a landscape photo during a time when it’s sunny then you take the same picture when it’s very cloudy and gloomy, the landscape is going to look completely different.

You’ll be telling a different story with your pictures.

Most photographers are only going to see a sunny day as the best time to take photos. However, more advanced photographers know how to convey different emotions with a picture that shows more than just a sunny day.

Photographic Filters

Filters can really help improve your landscape photography.

Polarizing filters are going to darken the sky and bring out the different colors that will work in a good contrast to the sky itself.

Neutral density filters will help prevent too much light from entering the camera. This is extremely helpful on days that are extremely sunny.

Wide-Angle Lens

A wide angle lens (like a Canon 16-35mm) is something that can really make the most amateur landscape photographer look more like a professional.

This type of lens is going to make the scene look a little wider, creating more space thus causing more of a landscape feel to it.

Although they aren’t going to be the widest lenses you can use, they really get the job done.

These types of lenses can create more of a depth of field which will also help create more depth in your photos, making for better landscapes.

Tips You Can Use

When it comes to landscape photography, there isn’t an exact science to it. However, there are certain guidelines that you can follow together the best possible photo.
